Photography Review review the Sea & Sea MX-10 35mm Auto Focus Underwater Camera Kit with YS-40A Strobe
Summary:
OK for a point and shoot in clear water.Strengths:
Simple and cheap underwater camera. Nice accessories available.Weaknesses:
To simple, batteries have a tendancy to not fit well in my camera and come loose. Minimum focus point is too distant for such a wide angle lens, flash tends to give a weird square shape to backscatter.Similar Products Used:
Nikonos V, AquashotAnother Review:
Summary:
I don’t think there is a better beginners underwater camera around. The camera is certainly better than a beginner underwater photographers so the many poor photos you get are due to the complexities of underwater photography, not the camera.Strengths:
Good beginners system. You can use it automatically underwater with almost no adjustments needed.Weaknesses:
My first camera leaked but Sea & Sea replace it by mail in 2 days.
The additional lenses are useful but are a bit fiddly to use.Similar Products Used:
None.

– ——————————————————————————This was the first underwater camera I bought, and I did so at a time when I actually knew nothing about underwater photography, but just had an urge to go and do it. The MX10 in my opinion turned out to be a great camera for someone like myself who knew very little about the subject. It’s easy to use and the only thing you have to remember with the camera (like any other underwater photography is to get as close to your subject as possible), is to guess you distance and set the exposure setting accordingly. Then it’s just a case of pointing and shooting.
I took the MX10 with me to Eygpt, States and the far East, and it’s light enough to keep in your hand luggage.
The next great thing about the MX10 is that not only is it easy to use and light to carry around, but you can buy a variety of lenses for Macro and Micro photography, so as you get used to the camera and want to experiment the opportunity is there. For example the first lens I bought was a wide angle lens which can easily be added to the camera.
Price is an issue for everyone, and I suppose at first I felt it was a little on the expensive side (about 500 quid when I bought it 18 months ago, shop around and I’m sure you could do better now), but the enjoyment it gave me far out weighed that. I suppose though the price reflects that you can take it to thiry metres and there are few cameras on the market for novice underwater photographers which means the price maybe a little higher than wanted.
I think if you view the camera as being something for someone knew to underwater photography or someone who wants to take occasional photos then its ideal. For some more into their photograph it’s not the best model.
The strobe which comes with the camera is good enough for the novice photographer and comes with manual or automatic settings.
I have never had a lesson on underwater photography, but enough info comes with the camera so there you can jump in and have a go. Finally it is easy to load/unload film, you can use above the surface if you want, the settings are easy to adjust underwater and some of the photos I have had with the MX10 are so good I have had them framed and put on the wall.
